How a Raw Battle with Shame Became a Worship Anthem of Identity and Grace

Black cross with gold rays on dark background, bold text reading "WHO YOU SAY I AM" to the right, minimalist design, spiritual tone.

Behind the Song: "Who You Say I Am"

There’s a war going on in every heart.

Not always one you can see on the surface — but it’s there.

A war between who the world says you are, and who God says you are.

That’s where this song came from.

“Who You Say I Am” wasn’t just written as a worship anthem — it was born from a personal fight. A fight with shame. With identity. With performance-driven faith. And in that wrestling, I found something deeper than good theology or catchy melody: I found truth that anchors the soul.

This post is the story behind that truth.

🎭 The Masks We Wear

The opening line hits hard for a reason:

“I’ve been chasing shadows, lost inside the fight

Felt the weight of failure, couldn’t make it right

Tried to earn Your mercy, wore a thousand masks...”

We live in a world that teaches performance equals worth. Even in the church, I often felt like we must "look the part" or "have it all together." If we mess up, we hide it. If we're hurting, we bury it. So we wear masks — to fit in, to be accepted, to feel loved.

But God doesn’t bless our mask.

He blesses our surrender.

Romans 5:8 reminds us:

“But God shows his love for us in that while I was still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Not when we cleaned up.

Not when I got our theology straight.

Not when we posted the perfect Christian selfie.

While I was still sinners.

That’s grace. And it wrecks the performance mentality.

🔓 A Gospel That Breaks Chains

The chorus became a declaration we needed to sing over ourselves:

“You say I’m chosen, You say I’m free

No more chains — You died for me

I am forgiven, I am redeemed

I’ll stand on this truth for eternity

I am not my shame, I am not my sin

I’m who You say I am”

Every word of that is rooted in Scripture. Let’s unpack it:

“You say I’m chosen” → 1 Peter 2:9:

“You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood…”

“You say I’m free” → John 8:36:

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

“I am forgiven” → Ephesians 1:7:

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses...”

“I am redeemed” → Isaiah 43:1:

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”

“I’m not my shame” → Romans 8:1:

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

The identity the world gives us — broken, dirty, worthless — is a lie.

The identity Jesus gives us — chosen, free, forgiven, redeemed — is truth.

That truth doesn’t just make us feel better. It sets us free.

🛑 Religion vs. Resurrection

By the time I wrote Verse 3, I knew I didn’t just want to describe salvation — I wanted to describe transformation:

“Now I see with new eyes, through the lens of grace

Even in the trial, I will lift Your name

I’ve got resurrection running in my veins

This is not religion — it’s a holy flame”

We’ve had enough of “behavioral Christianity.”

Check the boxes. Sit quietly. Look the part. Rinse. Repeat.

But real faith isn’t behavior control — it’s resurrection power.

Romans 8:11 says:

“If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies...”

That’s why I sing with fire.

That’s why I shout with conviction.

Because if the Spirit of God is in us, we don’t just believe — we burn.

🧱 Truth That Confronts the Lies

The pre-choruses were written as transitional punches — moments where the lies I’ve carried get broken:

“Every lie I believed starts to break

When I call on Your name…”

“Every doubt I’ve faced starts to fade

When I trust what You say…”

We’ve battled identity issues.

Some of us carry labels from our past:

Failure. Addict. Misfit. Divorcee. Too much. Not enough.

But those labels are not your name.

They are not your worth.

God gets the final word.

Isaiah 62:2 says:

“...you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give.”

This song is your anthem to that name.

To the truth that speaks louder than the enemy.

To the God who doesn’t just forgive your past — He rewrites it.

🙌 The Bridge Was Written for Breakthrough

“I am loved, not abandoned

I am held in Your hands

I am known, not forgotten

I am who You say I am”

We wrote that bridge for anyone who’s ever asked:

- Am I too far gone?

- Does anyone see me?

- Will I ever be enough?

We want that section to feel like a turning point.

Declare it until the walls fall.

Repeat it until your heart believes it.

Crank the band. Raise your hands. Let the fire fall.

This isn’t emotional hype. It’s biblical truth with a backbone.

🎬 Why I Kept the Title

Yes, Hillsong has a song by the same name.

And I respect what they created.

But this song — our song — was written in a totally different space.

It’s more raw. More broken. More confrontational.

We kept the title because it’s not a slogan — it’s a spiritual reality.

“I am who You say I am.”

We need that truth in this culture more than ever.

🧎 Final Thought: For the One Still Hiding

If you're still wearing masks...

If you're still trying to be good enough…

If your shame screams louder than grace…

This song is for you.

Not as a pat on the back.

Not as a pretty melody.

But as a battle cry.

Because your identity isn't up for debate.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17

“Who You Say I Am” isn’t just a song.

It’s a reminder.

A war cry.

A truth to anchor your soul when the voices lie.

So turn it up.

Sing it loud.

Own the name God gave you — and never wear another again.
